Cultivating Educators in the Classroom: What I've Done for 20+ Years

Antonia Johnson, CEO of Cornerstone Consulting

I've always loved teaching - at every level. It's what I did for over 20 years as an educator and educational trainer before starting my own company, Educator Development Training & Consulting. I have a passion for cultivating educators in the classroom by supporting them with tools to do their best work. This blog post is about how you can cultivate educators in your school to create more engaged learners who enjoy learning!

The most important thing we can do as educators is to help our students see the joy in learning and experience an environment that fosters it. It starts with us, modeling what we want them to become. We are teachers first and foremost - but also coaches, mentors, guides on a journey of discovery into new worlds of learning and how learning experiences impact the lives of students of all ages.

My question for my fellow educators: What is your message in your classroom? If we were to write your classroom mission on the doors of your diverse classrooms, what would it say?

I have often asked...How do we make the classroom an environment that engages students in learning and making a difference through evidence-based practices? We begin by building relationships with our students. The more connected our students feel, the more eager to learn they will be. It's important that educators know what motivates students...while keep their cultural differences in mind.

I've learned a few things in my career as an educator that has helped me cultivate culturally diverse and high-performing classrooms! Here are 3 things I've focused on that will help you:

  1. Focus on providing a variety of learning opportunities that are supportive and engaging for all learners and all cultures

. My classroom success has been attributed to focusing on my students and understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and developing strategies to close skill gaps.

  1. Create an inclusive environment where each child feels valued, respected, safe, and accepted as part of the whole class

while being able to appreciate his or her own difference with others.

  1. Allow children time to develop their skills through practice even when it's difficult

 or they don't want to.

In addition, here are 3 tips that will help you become a better educator and support diverse classroom development:

  • Training for educators to support diverse classroom development is essential and should be offered on a regular basis.
  • Provide high-quality professional learning opportunities that are both engaging and relevant\ to the needs of the educator & students in your school district or region.
  • Foster meaningful relationships with other teachers, staff members, administrators, parents, etc

I coach educators to overcome challenges, fears, and mental blocks in the classroom. I am a passionate educator who is committed to developing educators- with my career spanning over 20 years of teaching experience and educational trainer for new teachers & administrators in private and public school systems.

If you need support with designing instruction that increases cognitive demand with building confidence, clarity, and collaboration as a beginning or experienced teacher, schedule a quick exploration call!
